Volunteers helping at Bird Seed Sale
The New Hope Audubon Society is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff members or offices, so we cannot achieve our goals for conservation and education without the help of many volunteers. Depending on how much time and energy you would like to put into helping us, there are many volunteer opportunities. For example, you can simply help out with a one-day project, help staff a table at a special event, or help with one of our bird counts. If you are able to make a bigger commitment, you can serve on a committee such as our conservation or our education committee or even volunteer to serve on our Board of Directors.
So how do you get started? First of all, we recommend that you join our Facebook Group, “like” our Facebook Page, and/or sign up for the Yahoo announcement listserv since these are the places where we will announce volunteer opportunities. Another important step in becoming a volunteer is to fill out our online volunteer form indicating your interests. And you always can contact us directly with volunteer interests and questions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
HELP WITH CHIMNEY SWIFTS: NHAS needs some volunteers who would play a recording of Chimney Swifts near the downtown Chapel Hill post office (179 E. Franklin Street). The post office chimney was used by 100s of migrating swifts for many years until it was capped several years ago. With our encouragement, the chimney has recently been uncapped, and now we need to encourage the swifts to come back. One way to do that is to play recordings of their calls.
We need volunteers to take shifts starting about 45 minutes before dusk leading up to and during the birds going into the roost chimney in the evening. NHAS can provide signage and information on chimney swifts for interested by-standers. The volunteer, at ground level, can use a phone synced to a speaker and then loop the recording. We can provide the recording, but volunteers will need their own phones and speakers. If you would like to help with this project over the next month or so, please contact Barbara Driscoll at email@example.com.
